Understanding Kenya AA vs AB grades

Kenyan coffees are graded primarily by bean size and density, which strongly influence roast behavior and cup profile. Two of the most common grades encountered by specialty buyers are AA and AB.

  • AA: Larger screen size (typically screen 18 and above). Beans are generally denser and often associated with more structured acidity and clarity.
  • AB: Slightly smaller screen sizes (typically screens 15–17). AB coffees often display excellent sweetness and balance and are highly versatile for roasting.

Grading is performed after processing and drying, using screens and density separation. It does not, on its own, guarantee cup quality—careful processing and separation at the factory level are equally important.

  • AA coffees often perform well as single-origin offerings, with pronounced acidity, layered fruit character, and a structured finish.
  • AB coffees can offer exceptional value, with rounded sweetness and flexibility for filter or espresso applications.

Both grades from well-managed Kenyan factories can cup at high levels. Unity Ridge sources both AA and AB lots where quality, traceability, and consistency meet specialty standards.

  • Choose AA if you are seeking showcase lots with bright, expressive profiles.
  • Choose AB for versatile roasting, blending, or when looking for strong quality at accessible volumes.
